In Uganda, over 30% of children lose access to education after primary school, particularly girls who face compounding challenges. At 20 Years, Elizabeth Nakanyike's story represents both this heartbreaking statistic and the transformative power of compassionate intervention. Elizabeth is now a Senior 6 student at St Francis High School Buloba, dreaming of becoming a Procurement Officer—a future that once seemed completely impossible.

The Shattered Foundation:
Elizabeth's world collapsed at the most vulnerable moment in her young life—just after completing her Primary Leaving Exams Her father, a businessman and the family's sole breadwinner, passed away suddenly, leaving behind a grieving widow with no employment and four other children to care for.
"Like any other child, these children needed school and access to basic needs of Life, including the right to education," explains Pr. Martin Okalany Mugabi, Founder of Basic Life Uganda. "All this was lost immediately when the family breadwinner passed on."
The descent was rapid and devastating. The family found themselves struggling with shelter in a high-risk neighborhood, unable to secure adequate clothing, food, or primary healthcare. Elizabeth watched as her dreams of secondary education evaporated alongside the family's stability. "The family started struggling and lost all hope to the point of failing to at least acquire the basic needs of life," she recalls.
Divine Encounter:
It was during this darkest period that Elizabeth's path crossed with Pr. Martin Okalany Mugabi at church. "I met Elizabeth, who had lost hope to receive education like any other girl child, and I got to understand her story," says Pr. Martin. Recognizing both the immediate crisis and the long-term potential at risk, Basic Life Uganda intervened.
Holistic Restoration:
Basic Life Uganda took Elizabeth under its care through a comprehensive support system. She now lives with the family of Pr. Martin Okalany Mugabi, where she receives the holistic care every child deserves: secure shelter, nutritious food, proper clothing, and access to healthcare services when needed.
But the support extended beyond basic needs. Elizabeth was enrolled in Buloba Royal College, where she's currently completing her Senior 6 education. The organization's approach demonstrates a fundamental truth: you cannot educate a hungry child, nor can you expect academic success from a child living in insecurity.
Dreams Rekindled:
With stability restored, Elizabeth's natural ambition has flourished. "Elizabeth dreams of being a Procurement Officer one day," Pr. Martin shares with evident pride. This isn't just a career aspiration—it represents a complete reorientation from survival mode to future planning, from despair to purposeful ambition.
The Ongoing Journey:
"Currently, she stays with the family of the organization founder, Pr Martin Okalany Mugabi. She now has access to basic needs—shelter, food, clothes, and health services when needed," the Basic Life Uganda team reports. But the journey continues. "We are believing God for support and sponsorship to keep on pushing Elizabeth to the next level of her life and to achieve her dreams."
A Testament to Transformative Care:
Elizabeth's story powerfully illustrates Basic Life Uganda's core philosophy: addressing poverty requires more than temporary aid—it demands comprehensive, sustainable support that restores dignity while building futures. By providing a stable home environment alongside educational sponsorship, the organization creates the foundation upon which dreams can be rebuilt.
Conclusion:From a grieving young girl who had lost both her father and her educational future, Elizabeth has transformed into a confident Senior 6 student with clear career aspirations. Her journey embodies the promise of Proverbs 31:8-9: "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
At Basic Life Uganda, we don't just see statistics—we see Elizabeths. We recognize that behind every child denied education are dreams waiting to be realized, potential waiting to be unleashed, and futures waiting to be reclaimed.
